Donald Rumsfeld retired last week as Secretary of Defense. A move which should have come two years ago. As with the War in Afghanistan, the War in Iraq has become a post-invasion nightmare for the United States, the citizens of those countries, and the world itself. But this blog entry is not to critize Rumsfeld, but rather, Vice President Dick Cheney's recent comment at Rumsfeld's resignation Lollapalooza.
"Donald Rumsfeld the best Secretary of Defense the United States ever had."
Excuse me, Mr Vice President, but are you on crack?
Not only is his notion ludicrous, it is slap in the face to the United States. Does Mr. Cheney know anything of the history of this nation?
Forgive me though, I'm just a history enthusiast and not a politician. I mean, certainly Mr. Cheney is more qualified to explain why Donald Rumsfeld was a better Secretary of State then, say, George Marshall. I mean, what good did the Marshall Plan do anyway? Nobel Peace Prizes are overrated, I hear.
Rumsfeld and Caspar Weinberger are running neck and neck for the worst Secretaries of State in history. Though, if not for Weinberger, we'd never be in Iraq now in the first place.
Dick Cheney, I gained a small amount of respect for you when you disagreed, albeit not very vocally, with President Bush over the Defense of Marriage Act, but that is now lost. How incredulous and insulting to our country to call Rumsfeld the best Secretary of State we've had.
Shame on you for shaming the country like that.
